HYROX is an indoor fitness craze which started in Hamburg, Germany in 2018.  It typically involves a 1-km run followed by a functional exercise station that is then repeated 8 times. More accessible than CrossFit, it has massively grown in popularity over recent years.

The ABC layout lends itself well to supporting HYROX athletes with Air Runners and the space required for the functional exercises that tend to be incorporated into their events, e.g. Farmers Walks.   ABC now has its own HYROX-format class: HYROX FUSION – 9.30am each Sunday morning.

A number of ABC members and trainers have participated in HYROX or similar styles of fitness events this year.

In February, ABC trainer, Tom Summerbell competed in HYROX Rotterdam.  He did amazingly well, the 6th male out of 585 competitors.

Then, in May, ABC trainers, Cameron Wild and Helen Willers competed in the Deadly Dozen event at Middlesbrough Sports Village.   Although not strictly, HYROX, this event still involved completing a functional exercise following a run.  This time, 12 rounds of 400m rather than 8 rounds of 1km.  Cam and Helen did finished 3rd out of 11 mixed doubles.

For those interested in trying out HYROX for the first time, there was a HYROX Simulator event at The Fit House in Hartlepool on 29th June.  ABC members, Julie Grantham, Kendra Loudon, Lisa Best and Olivia McGough all competed in the doubles category.  They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and can’t wait to sign up for their next event!
